These have come in handy already this year with the predictably, unpredictable nighttime cold snaps we get in the mid Atlantic area this time of year. Material wise they're a nice fluffy type of fleece very similar to a comfy blanket. Functionality wise they don't seem to be a full purpose, wind break but they're a substantial enough material to lessen the effect of wind primarily through high degree of hot air trapping the thickness of the material allows for. Size wise they fit my three year-old daughter perfectly, but they are slightly too big still for my two year-old son but I suspect he'll grow into his very soon. Admittedly the intended purpose of being a winter balaclava is definitely appropriate as they can be a bit much for early/mid fall temps. Can definitely recommend just based on early season use so far.
