This soup bills itself as gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based, but it is none of those things if you make it with the ingredients the directions call for: beef broth, cheese, butter, croutons, and Worcestershire. You can use vegetarian versions of those things, so I’m only deducting one point here. I’m not strictly vegetarian, so the only thing I swapped out was the beef broth. Since the dry mix already has lentils in it, which classic French onion soup does not, I didn’t feel I was being improper. I used vegetable broth and some sliced dried mushrooms and their reconstituting liquid for umami and something chewy. It was very good and makes a lot of soup. I have some frozen for a future soup night. I recommend adding things you think would taste good to jazz it up to your own taste.

This is an awesomely customizable 2 pack of french onion soup. The price point is a bit up there in my opinion but I am reviewing this on the mix and the quality ingredients used in this. To make the traditional recipe you will need good beef broth, butter, sweet onion (used Vidalia), not sweet apple cider, Worcestershire sauce good cheese and a decent amount of time if you are caramelizing the onions. I did one the long traditional way and it came out amazingly and I did one with the variation of making it more like a beef stew and it came out all together like a different soup albeit a great one. The spices in the provided packets provided an awesome flavor for my soups!

I followed the recipe on the package, and this soup turned out tasting really good. It wasn't the easiest recipe. It takes time, particularly carmelizing the onions. I used apple juice instead of apple cider, because the recipe said I could, but I felt it made the soup too sweet. I did have to add a good amount of salt to balance the sweetness.The second time I used the soup mix, I put it in the crock pot with some stew meat and beef broth. This way also came out really good, though it did lack the complexity of flavor cooking it properly had.

I prepared this soup yesterday … I also addedMy own beef stock and meat… I also added 3 large sliced onions which was more than what was recommended…10 people had this soup last night and everyone loved it …Before you start make sure you have the extra ingredients on hand …As I didn’t and needed to place a grocery orderAnd have some items delivered while preparing what I did have on hand !!
