Just back from a ten-hour international flight, I was frustrated having to watch movies using the free headphones provided by the airline. I brought along my Bluetooth buds and realized that I should have hauled out my old corded headphones. I’ve typically used my Bluetooth buds with my tablet on domestic flights. On the long-haul flight, I noticed another passenger enjoying his wireless buds using a small dongle plugged into the headphone jack on the seat. I vowed to have one for my next long flight and found this Gmcell dongle.I’m not due for another vacation for a bit, so I tested the dongle with my laptop and various Bluetooth earbuds. The power switch on the unit allows you to choose between using the dongle as a transmitter or a receiver. Once you switch on the unit, it attempts to pair with nearby devices. On a phone with a screen, the unit shows up as BT-29 in the Bluetooth menu. Pairing with a set of earbuds without a screen took a few tries but eventually worked. Holding down the PLAY/PAUSE button allows you to pair with a second set of Bluetooth earbuds.While watching a video with the dongle, there was a significant delay with an older, inexpensive pair of earbuds, but only a minimal delay with higher-quality ones. During my test, the sound quality was clear and loud (the unit also has volume controls), and I didn’t encounter any issues maintaining a stable connection. The 4-LED battery level indicator dropped by one after three hours of usage.The dongle comes with a built-in rechargeable battery and a dual jack adapter for use in planes. It would be nice if it came with a storage case.

I purchased this item for its transmit functionality, primarily so that I can watch the TVs at the gym using my Bluetooth headset. Because the treadmills have a plug-in headphone jack, I thought this would be the perfect solution. I didn't even realize that it's also a receiver until after I received it, which is also pretty cool.Transmit ModeIn this mode, you can plug the device into a headphone jack, then broadcast the audio to your Bluetooth headphones. This might be a personal audio player, TV, etc. The first time you do this, you need to pair your headphones. In my case, this was the hardest part, as I couldn't remember how to pair my ear buds with another device. But there's only one button on my ear bud, so I just continued to hold it down as I turned it on until I heard, "pairing...". Then I put the device into "TX" mode using the slide switch, and a moment later I heard, "connected". After that, you're ready to go, and whatever audio source the device is connected to will be broadcast to your headphones.Receive ModeI don't know if I will ever use this, but I tested it for the sake of being thorough. I plugged the device into the microphone/line in jack on my computer, then moved the slide switch to "RX". On my phone, I searched for new Bluetooth devices and saw "BT-29", which is noted in the instruction manual. I selected it, and immediately my phone connected. I then opened up an audio recorder on my phone, chose line in as the source and was able to record audio from my phone while playing a YouTube video.Overall, this is just what I needed for my simple scenario, and I'm very happy with the purchase. The receive feature is nice, and maybe I'll have occasion to use it at some point. The device appears to have a microphone, so there are probably some additional scenarios that I'm not even considering. It also supports two pairs of headphones, which is great, especially at the gym.I haven't gotten a solid gauge on battery life yet, but I tend to keep things charged up to avoid the frustration of having no battery when I want to use something.Pros- Build quality is good- Audio quality hasn't suffered- Clear instructions- Supports multiple headsets- Receive and transmit capability- Comes with airplane adapterCons- So far, I haven't identified any. The $25 price point feels a little high, but it seems to be the norm for these devices.

I love the versatility of this adapter to both transmit and receive signals. I’ve been able to use it in so many scenarios, such as playing music from my phone on an older stereo and speakers or watching TV with my friend with two sets of Bluetooth headphones – no cords or splitter cables needed. I even use it in my car to play podcasts from my phone on my car speakers. Literally, I can plug this into anything with an AUX input to make it Bluetooth-able – whether that’s to broadcast a signal (like a phone or TV) or receive a signal to play (like on speakers or headphones). It even comes with the adapter to use it on an airplane. I love that I can pair two different headphones or speakers. It’s small and unobtrusive and it’s designed to be so easy to use. I just move the switch to choose whether to Receive (RX) or Transmit (TX) and can pair one or two headphones or speakers using the play button. The little lights tell me that they were successfully connected. It has a rechargeable battery, so I just charge it up between uses (or even charge it while using it) and don’t have to keep feeding it alkaline batteries. I think this is a clever little device that just opens up lots of opportunities to turn old tech into new BT tech.

I had intended to use this transmitter to power Bluetooth earbuds for live, on-stage music, but its latency is *much* too long (~50ms) to be useful for that purpose. (I can't comment on its suitability for other purposes.)
